The Ministry of Trade noted the price of curly red chili and large red chili in some traditional markets showed an increase in prices from before to after Lebaran due to lack of supply.
“Red chili is quite a bit up, yes. This I learned from some time, from H-60 to H + 5 Lebaran the price is still stable high. So I suspect because there is a lack of supply,” said Director General of Domestic Trade at the Ministry of Trade Tjahya Widayanti in Jakarta, copied from Antara.
Tanya explained that indeed the red chili commodity in many production centers was being harvested, but it could not meet the overall market needs. Besides curly and large red chili, he said that the prices of many strategic food commodities during the Ramadhan-Lebaran season this year were observed to be stable. This condition is different from last year, which showed a fluctuation in prices for eggs and purebred chicken.
Red cayenne pepper in East Java, such as Malang and Sidoarjo, is quite low, around Rp. 15,000 per kilogram. Based on the record of the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS), the price of a large national big red chili on June 12, 2019, was at the level of Rp.49,400 per kilogram (kg), curly red chili at the level of Rp.47,300 per kg, red chili at the level IDR39,950 per kg, and green cayenne pepper is at the level of IDR40,600 per kg.
Tanya added that there were indeed differences between the price conditions of red cayenne pepper and large/curly red chilies. That’s because of differences in community needs ahead of Eid al-Fitr which generally uses curly red chili for cooking spices, rather than red cayenne pepper. “If it is Lebaran, people need red chili to make rendang, make curry, while cayenne pepper does not demand too much,” he said.
On another occasion, it was reported, the price of red chilies in many traditional markets in South Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province, rose sharply from Rp20 thousand to Rp60,000 per kilogram.
“The increase in the price of chilies is due to lack of supply, and it persists to this day,” said Head of the Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and Small and Medium Enterprises in South Solok Regency, Irwandi Osmaidi in Padang Aro, copied from Antara.
He said that the best quality chili was sold by traders at Rp. 60 thousand, while the middle quality was Rp. 55 thousand, and the lowest quality was Rp. 50,000 per kilogram. “On average traders sell Rp 55,000 per kilogram of chili,” he said.
The supply of red chilies in Solok Selatan comes from local farmers and some from Solok and Kerinci Regencies, Jambi Province. The lack of supply to Pasara, he said, was probably due to the Lebaran atmosphere and the farmers had not harvested the chilies. “If the price of chili continues to rise we will coordinate with the province to stabilize prices,” he said.
For the prices of various other necessities, he said, it is still stable, such as shallots being sold for Rp. 30 thousand per kilogram, while rice for Rp. 9 thousand. One resident of Sungai Page, Fitria Yuningsih, said on Monday (10/6), at the Muaralabuh Market, the price of red chili was quite expensive, at Rp55 thousand per kilogram. “I was forced to reduce the purchase of chilies from the usual one kilogram, now enough by half,” he said.
Also, he said, the price of jengkol is expensive where usually one cup (with 20 items) is only Rp. 15 thousand, now it has risen to Rp. 30 thousand. “Jengkol is now also one cup of Rp. 30 thousand and quite expensive,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of the City of Malang stated that the increase in the price of red chili in May 2019 or during Ramadan, pushed inflation in Malang City which was recorded at 0.35 percent.
Head of Malang BPS, Sunaryo, said that the increase in the price of red chili peppers in the last Ramadhan amounted to 15.14 percent, contributing the most to inflation in Malang. “Red chili rose 15.14 percent, contributing to inflation by 0.046 percent,” said Sunaryo, in Malang, East Java, copied from Antara.
